Where Stone Comes From

Choosing stone countertop types can be overwhelming! Let us help you get to know the options; below is a listing of three of our countertop choices with information on the stone’s originations.

Quartz – while a naturally occurring mineral, quartz countertops are engineered with crushed quartz crystals mixed with polymers, color pigments and resin. The word "quartz" comes from the German Quarz or the Saxon word Querkluftertz, meaning cross-vein ore. Quartz countertops were introduced in the '60s, becoming quite popular at the beginning of the 21st century.

Granite – removed from quarries in large slabs, raw granite is formed into countertops with industry-specific tools. Although granite has been used for building construction for a very long time (think Egyptian pyramid walls), granite countertops were a relatively new concept for the kitchen until the 1980’s.

Quartzite – this 100% natural stone is formed from sandstone or chet under heat and high pressure when grains are bonded by mineral silica. It is quarried from deep within the Earth’s surface. For official classification by the British Geological Survey, quartzite must contain at least 80% quartz by volume.
