Stone Ideas for Every Room

While countertop design is a cornerstone of our business, we also have many happy clients who have worked with us to utilize our incredible stone and fine craftsmanship beyond the typical places in their homes and businesses, like outside of the kitchen. Explore ideas here on how to use quartz, granite, marble, and other stone to create a unique focal point, use remnants, or set a new tone for an entire space!

Living Room

Fireplaces suit granite and other stone incredibly well, as exposure to heat over extended lengths of time does not cause damage. When adorning a fireplace with stone, some popular ways are on the hearth, corbels, mantel and mantel shelf.

While a completely stone coffee table takes a special kind of space, a stone table-top is more adaptable to different styles. It is both beautiful and resistant to spills. Similarly, home bars are ideal spots for beautiful countertop design. This stone use really makes an impact for those sitting around it! Just like with stone coffee tabletops, those white drink rings don’t stand a chance!

Closets

Master bedroom walk-in closets are perfect for stone additions. Bring light, drama, and focus into these smaller spaces with a slab which matches your personality (or your shoes)! This is also an opportunity to tie together the ensuite bathroom and visually enlarge the two spaces as they flow into each other.

Laundry Room

Doing laundry is no one’s favorite chore but the task is certainly less daunting when the room is aesthetically pleasing! Stone countertops create a feel of freshness and establish specific areas for separating and folding clothes. Be sure to install material which is resistant to scrapes by buttons, belts and laundry baskets. Shelves are also a tidy addition here – they are easy to dust too!

Mudroom

This dumping ground of coats, shoes, and sports equipment sees a lot of traffic, both coming and going. Adding a seating area, countertop space or backsplash can transform this often overlooked area into a functional haven. Utilize the durability and low maintenance of stone to your advantage and elevate the first look into your home.

Office

Custom desktops and accent tables create a sophisticated space to receive clientele and conduct online meetings. The perfect place for neutrality, clean and precise countertop design is professionalism to the max. An accent wall of contrasting stone also looks great here as an injection of style.

Craft Room

Ease of cleaning is truly important for crafters working with hot glue, washi tape, and other sticky elements. Plus, even when the room is filled with yarn, paint, beads, and stickers, creative chaos always looks better on stone! Choose a slab with minimal seams to reduce visual clutter.

Bathroom

Although countertop design often extends from the kitchen into the bathroom, there are other places in this space which benefit from stone due to the heavy exposure to moisture. Walls, vanity tops/backsplashes, and cutout shower walls are all perfect places for a unique slab of stone to infuse style. Katie Labourdette-Martinez and Olivia Wahler of California’s Hearth Homes Interiors says stone slabs in bathrooms are major upgrades. “It just makes such a statement and gives the space a more polished feel,” Wahler says.

Dining Room

Granite’s heat-resistance is helpful here, as hot pots and drinks can be placed directly on the top of a granite dining table (or a stone tabletop) without worry that the table itself will singe. The natural stain-resistance is also helpful against food and liquid drops. Those looking for a small stone addition to this room have also opted to create a sideboard, buffet table, or credenza from stone. These pieces are perfect for desserts, coffee set-ups, and extra utensils.

Flooring/Stairs

Stone tile is long-lasting and unique. Creating a pattern in a large area draws attention and directs visitors through the space. If you decide to use granite tile, ensure it is not highly polished. On stairs, raise the edges with perpendicular rods. Always keep this type of flooring dry.

Patio

Seating areas, tables, and flooring accents are all great ideas for using stone on the patio. Those with a kitchen, grill, or island also love using our stone here. Both beautiful and functional, stone means these areas are easy to clean and suffer minimal damage from typical weather throughout the year.

Garage

For those with cabinets in the garage, stone crowning looks great and is durable against anything thrown in its direction, including storage bins, bicycles, and tools. Sealed countertops stand up against heat and cold for long periods of time, as well as tie together this room with the rest of the house.

Tips for Space Optimization

  • Embrace Vertical Space

Even in small spaces, the room can feel taller by drawing the eye upwards. Optimize vertical surfaces and incorporate vertically-laid stone tiles or narrow, vertical stone cladding on a wall to enhance height.

  • Place Strategic Accents

Sometimes, less is more. Instead of overwhelming a space with stone, focus on a few stand-out pieces in strategic locations. Carefully placed accents can work well together to advance the overall design.

  • Mix and Match Materials

Add texture and visual interest by installing different types of stone with similar colors (like Blue Tones) or seams to create a sense of harmony throughout the whole house or building.
