What to Do If Your Countertop Is Chipped or Cracked
My Countertop is Damaged!
If you have noticed a countertop chip or crack in your home or workplace, don’t panic! While it can be upsetting to discover damage, there are several ways to approach a fix. First, assess the damage.
Location: some places are more critical than others to repair quickly, such as in the middle of the countertop, near the edge or around the sink. Site will also determine how best to address the issue.
Severity: a small or hairline defect may be easier to repair, while a larger, deeper chip or crack may require more extensive measures. Consider the likelihood of someone being hurt if the chip or crack is not addressed.
Countertop Type: natural stone such as marble, granite and quartzite repairs differently than engineered stone countertops like quartz.
Solution Options
Next, determine the best solution. Small blemishes may be temporarily fixed with a food-safe epoxy or adhesive which is specifically designed for countertops. If going this route, clean the spot thoroughly, then apply, dry and remove excess adhesive exactly per the manufacturer’s instructions. Larger or significantly located chips, cracks or damage should be surveyed by a TNT professional who can recommend the best repair options.
Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure
Finally, prevent future chips and cracks by following these guidelines:
Discourage sitting/ standing on the countertop; avoid placing very heavy items there as well.
Always use a cutting board instead of chopping food directly on the countertop’s surface.
Use hot pads or trivets for hot dishes and plates, as excessive heat can cause damage.
Seal per recommendation to prevent moisture from causing structural issues. Learn more about sealing here!
