Everything you need to know about countertops
FAQ Headquarters: Queries Answered Here!
Do you have questions about countertops? You’re not alone! Deciding to add or replace countertops in your home, work space or rental property is a big decision, one which could potentially make or break a sale, or help you fall in love with your place all over again. While there are many factors to consider, TNT is there to guide you every step of the way! Below are some of the most common questions we receive from clients.
Countertop Materials & Selection
1. What makes up granite, quartzite, quartz, marble, and porcelain countertops?
- Granite, marble and quartzite are 100% natural stone.
- Quartz is engineered from 90% natural quartz crystals with resin binders.
- Porcelain countertops are engineered from natural clay materials, then fired at high temperatures.
2. Which countertop material is best for my needs?
All materials have their pros and cons. To best approach a decision, consider where the countertop will be located. Busy areas in households and rentals do well with granite and quartz due to their durability and low maintenance, design-focused spots like reception areas often have marble or quartzite for their show-stopping characteristics, and more functional spaces such as bathrooms and laundry rooms utilize porcelain or quartz. 3. Can stone be used outdoors?
TNT regularly installs granite and quartzite slabs outdoors because they hold up well against sun and weather exposure. Quartz and marble are not recommended for outdoor applications as UV exposure can cause discoloration and weakening.
Countertop Design & Features
4. Do you install backsplashes?
We have completed many gorgeous backsplashes in stone, which thoroughly complement existing countertops and other stone nearby. Either matching or contrasting designs are available, using similar or different materials.
5. Do you sell and install sinks?
Yes, we offer a range of sink types and styles, including integrated, stainless, granite composite, double bowl, single bowl, lavatory and bar styles.
6. Can custom shapes and features be created with stone?
Absolutely! We specialize in custom work including curved edges, scalloped backsplashes, decorative accents, and unique shapes to match your design vision.
7. Can existing stone be matched?
We do our very best to match existing stone, though both quartz and natural stone vary between slabs. Bringing samples or photos when picking stone is the best way to select the closest match available.
8. What unusual work does TNT do?
In addition to countertops, TNT crafts beautiful tub surrounds, vent hoods, miters, and statement pieces. For those looking to enhance their countertops, we offer a very popular waterfall edge option also.
Countertop Installation Process
9. How long does the entire process take?
From initial consultation to completed installation, most projects take 2-3 weeks. This process includes consultation, templating, fabrication, delivery, installation, and cleanup.
10. What happens during the templating process?
Our team at TNT creates precise digital templates using laser measurement technology. This ensures perfect fit as well as minimal waste.
11. Will my kitchen be unusable for long?
TNT strives to minimize disruption by working efficiently and being accommodating to schedules as much as possible. Our installation is typically completed in just one day, though your kitchen may remain partially unusable for an additional day or two while plumbing, backsplash, or other finishing work is completed.
12. Do I need to be home during installation?
We recommend a decision-maker is present during installation for site access and to address any questions. Installation typically ranges from 4-8 hours, depending on complexity.
13. How do I prepare for installation?
Thank you for wanting to help the process along! We wrote a blog post dedicated to this question: tntcountertops.com/blog/prepare-for-countertop-installation
Countertop Care & Maintenance
14. What cleaning products are best for stone?
The best cleaning results come from using pH-neutral cleaners specifically designed for natural stone. Avoid acidic cleaners with ingredients such as vinegar, lemon, and bleach, and those with damaging abrasive products.
15. How do I prevent stains?
Clean all spills immediately, use cutting boards and trivets, avoid putting anything acidic directly on the countertop, and ensure proper sealing to prevent staining.
16. Is maintenance a burden?
No! Daily care takes only gentle cleaning with appropriate cleaners, then wiping dry. For natural stone, annual care is scheduling sealing.

Tips from the Countertop Experts
Choose samples in your actual lighting
Stone appearance varies significantly under different lighting conditions. View samples in your home's natural and artificial light. TNT also highly recommends selecting stone in-person: tntcountertops.com/blog/in-person-selection.
Plan for electrical and plumbing
Coordinate with your electrician and plumber before templating to ensure proper outlet and plumbing placement. If building new, double-check plans for this accessibility to save time and money later on.
Countertop Budget for upgrades
Consider upgraded edges, backsplashes, and under-cabinet lighting to maximize your investment's impact. For those who truly love their new countertops or feature, we often see clients return to TNT ready for additional stone to integrate into the rest of their space!
